Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction industry who have life-altering injuries. Every year the association honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, originally from Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a massive stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg severely impaired, resulting in foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, resulting in financial tension on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the device in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.

Luckily, an employee at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the wonderful grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
